It’s sweater season! This is one of my favorite times of the year for fashion. The sweater trend for 2026 focuses on dramatic volume. According to KnitPro, expect to see exaggerated sleeves, oversized fits, updated classics ( rubbed turtlenecks, preppy argyle, quarter-zips), rich textures ( fringe, fuzzy yarns, accents ), and a focus on personalized statements.
Anticipate vibrant colors, sporty elements, and functional layering, moving beyond simple minimalism into expressive knitwear.
Sweater Trend #1: Oversized Sweaters

Trendy sweaters are moving beyond loose-fitting into the solid “oversized” category. If it’s long, wide, or hangs off the shoulder, it is in style this winter season.
Sweater Trend #2: Polo-Style Sweaters

Polo-style sweaters are the knitted version of a long-sleeve polo shirt. They feature the signature lapel collar, which earns them a place in this category.
Sweater Trend #3: Ribbed Turtlenecks Sweaters

Look for thin or chunky ribbed pullovers with dramatic turtlenecks that extend high to the chin.
Sweater Trend #4: Graphic Sweaters

The graphic sweater trend has made its way from the runway show to production sweaters and is going strong in stores. Expect to see just about every image from animals, shapes, and messages on sweaters. Look for one large image or photo centering the front of a pullover with a plain back.
Sweater Trend #5: Layering Sweaters

This sweater trend is also known as knits-on-knits. It involves combining one knitted garment over another knitted piece. They do not need to match. You will usually see a cardigan over a tank or pullover, but look for chunky scarves and wraps over dresses, too.
Sweater Trend #6: Sweater Vests

The vests are boxy this year with high crew or V-necks. The wide shoulders and long armholes make it easy to wear over another top. These pullover vests are untailored with ribbing around the armhole.
Sweater Trend #7: Winter White Sweaters

The winter white sweater look this year can be found in white or cream. It supports the neutral palette, which is popular, and honestly goes with just about everything in your wardrobe. White or cream looks well with black, other neutrals, or bright colors. This is a must-have for your winter wardrobe this year.
Sweater Trend #8: Soft-Textured Sweaters

This winter, expect to see any type of soft, cuddly fiber that gives a halo effect, such as alpaca, cashmere, yak, and especially blends of fibers. Look for colors that fade gently into one another, creating a soft look.
Sweater Trend #9: Jewel-Toned Sweaters

Sweaters that have saturated jewel colors like ruby, emerald, sapphire, and amethyst purple are breaking through the neutral colors that have dominated the runways last year. These rich hues complement all skintones, offering warmth and contrast that make them universally appealing.
Sweater Trend #10: Argyle Sweaters

Argyle sweaters offer a comforting sense of nostalgia and timelessness; this fits the current trend cycle of revisiting and reinventing classics.
You can combine trends to create your own style this winter. Try mixing a silhouette with a winter white, or mix different jewel-toned colors together for a bold, energetic statement. Or you can layer a soft texture with a fringe! Just have fun and be authentically you!
