What is High Cholesterol?
Cholesterol[1] is a type of fat (lipid) or waxy substance that is found in all the cells in your body. Your body uses it to perform many important functions: it builds the outer structure of every cell, helps make essential hormones like estrogen and testosterone, produces bile acids, which help your body digest fats, and it is a key building block for making vitamin D from sunlight.
Where Cholesterol Comes From

Your liver makes about 80% of the cholesterol your body needs. The rest comes from eating animal products such as meat, poultry, eggs, and full-fat dairy.
Your body needs cholesterol to survive, but having too much of it circulating in your blood can cause serious health problems.
Cholesterol travels through your blood on proteins called lipoproteins.
LDL (low-density lipoprotein) is the "bad" cholesterol because, in high amounts, it starts to build up plaque in your artery walls. This can slow down your blood flow and increase your risk of cardiovascular disease.

Over time, this plaque hardens and narrows the blood vessels, which restricts the flow of oxygen-rich blood to your vital organs and can lead to dangerous blood clots, heart attacks, or strokes.
High cholesterol is called the "silent killer" mainly because it generally produces no physical symptoms. A person can live with dangerously high cholesterol levels for decades without feeling sick, experiencing pain, or noticing any changes in their body.
Unlike an infection that causes fever or an injury that causes pain, the accumulation of cholesterol inside your blood vessels does not trigger your body's sensory nerves.
LDL slowly embeds itself into the lining of your arteries. This creates a steady buildup of plaque over many years without altering your daily physical comfort.
A person's outward physical fitness or weight does not accurately reflect their internal cholesterol levels. Someone who looks completely healthy and athletic can still have dangerously high arterial plaque.
Because it lacks early warning signs, the very first "symptom" of cholesterol is frequently a catastrophic cardiovascular event. According to organizations like the American Heart Association, the issue is usually only discovered after the narrowed artery completely blocks blood flow or ruptures, resulting in a sudden heart attack or stroke.
This makes routine blood tests (lipid panels) the only reliable way to detect and manage the condition before damage occurs. For this reason, it is important to have your cholesterol numbers routinely checked. Keeping your numbers within a “heart-healthy” range can help you lower your risk for heart disease.
Lipid Panel Blood Tests

Doctors measure your cholesterol levels using a standard blood test called a lipid panel or lipid profile. This test evaluates your overall cardiovascular health by measuring the amount of fat circulating in your bloodstream.
What the Lipid Panel Blood Test Measures
The lab breaks your blood sample down into four primary numbers, measured in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL)
Total Cholesterol: The overall amount of cholesterol in your blood.

High: 240 mg/dL and above.
LDL ("Bad") Cholesterol

Stroke: Occurs when a blood clot blocks blood flow to a part of the brain.
Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD): Blocked arteries in the legs, which can cause cramping, aching, or pain when walking.
Because you cannot rely on symptoms to warn you, health organizations recommend that adults get their cholesterol checked at least once every four to six years starting in early adulthood.
Lifestyle Habits That Can Lower Your Cholesterol

You can significantly lower your bad cholesterol (LDL) and raise your good cholesterol (HDL) by making strategic adjustments to your daily routine.
Focus on Cardioprotective Dietary Patterns
Eliminate trans fats: check ingredient labels for "partially hydrogenated oils" and avoid fried foods, commercial baked goods, and stick margarines, as they aggressively raise LDL and lower HDL.
Reduce saturated fats: Limit your intake of fatty meats, poultry skin, lard, butter, and full-fat dairy products to prevent your liver from producing excess cholesterol.
Incorporate soluble fiber: Eat more oatmeal, kidney beans, Brussels sprouts, apples, and pears, which act like a sponge in your digestive tract to bind cholesterol and pull it out of your body.
Add whey protein: Consuming whey protein from dairy products has been shown in clinical studies to lower both LDL and total cholesterol.

What Foods Can I Eat to Lower My Cholesterol?

Foods that lower your cholesterol:
Oatmeal
Oatmeal is high in fiber and contains more soluble fiber than other grains. According to the Mayo Clinic, consuming 5 to 10 grams or more of soluble fiber a day decreases your total and LDL cholesterol. (“How to Lower Your Cholesterol Fast | Everyday Health”) Eating oatmeal is not only an easy way to lower your cholesterol, but you can also sprinkle some fruit or cinnamon on it for some extra flavor.
Walnuts
In May 2010, an analysis of 25 trials published in JAMA Internal Medicine[2] found that you can lower your cholesterol by just eating an average of 67 g, only 2.4 ounces, of nuts a day. This can reduce your total cholesterol by 5 percent and your LDL cholesterol by 7 percent. Almost any type of nut will help you lower your cholesterol, but walnuts are a top choice.
Salmon and Fatty Fish
The next time you are dining out, choose salmon over steak. According to the American Heart Association, adding fish to your diet is beneficial to your health. By replacing meat with salmon and other types of fatty fish, such as Mackerel, Herring, Tuna, and Trout, you are not only lowering your LDL-raising saturated fats but are also getting the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids. This can lower your triglyceride levels, a type of fat that circulates in the blood, and can reduce your risk of developing blood clots and high blood pressure. If you have already had a heart attack, omega-3 fatty acids can reduce the risk of sudden death.
Bananas
Bananas are rich in fiber, especially soluble fiber, and are one of the healthiest and most inexpensive fresh fruits available. They not only contribute to a healthy body (reducing inflammation and blood pressure) and a stronger immune system, but they can also significantly lower the bad cholesterol in your body[3].
Almond milk
Almonds are heart-healthy, and one cup of almond milk contains only 30 to 40 calories. It has no cholesterol or saturated fat. Fortified almond milk has the same amount of vitamin D as cow’s milk (skim), and certain brands can even provide up to 50 percent more calcium.
Blueberries
All berries are good for you and contain antioxidants, but blueberries also contain 5 g of fiber in every cup. They are a good way to help you lower cholesterol fast. You can cook blueberries, eat them dried, or enjoy them raw. If you buy them frozen, make sure you eat them as soon as you thaw them out, so they are still firm. Blueberries can make a delicious parfait dessert when you layer them with a fat-free or low-fat yogurt.
Beans
Researchers in Canada found that eating a daily serving of cooked beans lowers your “bad” cholesterol by 5 percent over six weeks. The study also concluded that there was no difference in the cholesterol-lowering effects of the different types of legumes: Beans, lentils, chickpeas, and peas.
Whole Wheat Grains and Pasta
Whole grains are the healthiest grains to eat and are linked to lowering cholesterol[4]. They also lower your risk of heart disease, certain cancers, diabetes, and other health conditions. One reason they help lower cholesterol is that they are high in fiber. The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Dietary Guidelines for Americans (PDF) for 2020 – 2025 recommends eating half of your grains from whole-grain foods and the rest from enriched grains.
According to Mayo Clinic, by replacing your refined foods- white rice, white bread, and white flour- with whole grains: brown rice, whole wheat bread, and whole wheat pasta, you retain important iron, many B vitamins, and dietary fiber, which can lower the absorption of cholesterol in your bloodstream.
Red wine
Believe it or not, when consumed in moderation, red wine can raise your High-density lipoprotein or HDL cholesterol (“good” cholesterol). A study published in BMC Medicine[5] in 2021 found that drinking alcohol in moderation could be “cardio-protective among healthy individuals”. Healthy drinking is defined as having no more than one drink a day for women and two for men, or even less if you are over the age of 65. One drink is considered to be 5 oz of wine.
