“But all things should be done decently and in order." - 1 Corinthians 14:40.
Whether it’s an unexpected dinner invitation or a last-minute request for a formal event, it can be challenging to put together an outfit without the right items in your wardrobe.
I have always felt that I was born in the wrong era. I love looking at vintage photos; the women look flawless, elegant, and exquisite. From their makeup down to their shoes, these ladies were the epitome of modest elegance.

But did you know that most women of the vintage era had fewer clothes than we do today? They knew how to shop for less and choose the right wardrobe items, which helped them look well-polished and put-together all the time.
In short, these women were "well-maintained".

"If I had to leave my home right now with little to no warning, I could go in confidence with my entire wardrobe in tow". - Isabella Boston.
What is a Capsule Wardrobe?
One of the methods women used in the 50s was called "switch mates," an early version of today's "capsule wardrobe". This involved decluttering one's closet and keeping only versatile, high-quality, and favorite items that can be mixed and matched, creating a sustainable wardrobe that minimizes decision fatigue.
When using this method, every piece of clothing should have a purpose in your closet or should have already "earned" its place.
The "Wardrobe Capsule Philosophy" is that, although you have fewer clothes, if you care for them properly by steaming, repairing, and storing, they will always look pristine and luxurious.
In addition, the "Versatility Focus" is that having a few versatile pieces means you spend less time shopping and more time looking well-polished & put together.
How do I start a capsule wardrobe?

"Sometimes the hardest part is letting go!"
Start by defining your style and conducting an honest audit of your current wardrobe.
Pick a color palette (80% neutral, 20% accents).
Select approximately 15-30 versatile pieces (tops, bottoms, jackets/knits/cardigans, accessories & shoes) tailored to your lifestyle. You want to look stylish and polished, but you also have to be practical.
First, assess and purge your current wardrobe: identify your most-worn items and remove pieces that do not fit, are damaged, or no longer suit your lifestyle.
Sometimes, the hardest part is letting go!
So, it is important to be honest with yourself. If you have items in your closet that you rarely use or are uncomfortable wearing, get rid of them.
Donate those clothes to a good charity.
Understanding the 3 Capsule Layers
Base/foundation (items that touch your body)
Mid Layers (cardigans, knit pieces, & blazers)
Structure. The things that add "polish" to the capsule pieces.
According to fashion, lifestyle, and equestrian YouTube creator Alex Collins, a capsule wardrobe should have 3 layers: base/foundation, mid layers, and structure.
Your base and foundation pieces are 1-3 neutrals, which you wear close to your body.
The mid layers are your coordinating neutral, layering pieces, and the structures are color accent pieces that add polish and personality to your outfits; these colors are used sparingly in single tops or skirts, accessories, or tailored outerwear to break up monotony.
In short, they keep your wardrobe more interesting and less boring.
Rule of thumb: a functional accent color should pair with every neutral in your capsule.
The color chart above instructs you to pick 1 or 2 "popular" accent colors, but for my ideal capsule wardrobe, I chose an autumn accent color palette with up to 5 colors. My point is this: make the method work for you and your lifestyle, or you might not stick with it.
Next, pick three adjectives to define your desired look (e.g., "elegant," "tailored," "polished," "cozy," "intelligent," etc.).
"Focus on quality over quantity; it's not about how much you have but what you do with what you have that matters."
The 5-5-5 Rule
Last, select key items (the basic 5-5-5 rule): A common formula includes 5 tops, 5 bottoms, 5 cardigans/knits/jackets, and 5 pairs of shoes. You can tweak this formula by adding more categories or subcategories.
You can create 125 unique outfit combinations using the 5-5-5 rule!
All praises and glory to the Lord, my God. I use this method, and can fit my entire wardrobe in one suitcase and one travel bag!
If I had to leave my home right now with little to no warning, I could go in confidence with my entire wardrobe in tow (minus my snow and rain boots) and only two pairs of shoes. (When I pack my travel bags, I use a technique that is a mixture of rolling and folding. Perhaps I will write a blog on "packing techniques" at a later date.)
If the "5-5-5" rule doesn't work for you, then select a number that does, such as an "8-8-8" rule, or, as previously stated, tweak the method and numbers to your liking.
But remember, the whole point of this blog is to declutter your closet and create a highly functional wardrobe with fewer items.
Items to Consider
Tops: White button-downs, high-quality tees, and silk or high-quality blouses.
Bottoms: Tailored trousers, dark-wash jeans, and skirts.
Dresses: Three formal dresses (one of which is black). In addition, at least three summer dresses.
Outerwear/Layers: An elegant dress coat, a winter coat, a structured blazer, a trench coat, and stylish cardigans.
Shoes: flats, boots, heels, and sandals. (Select stylish shoes that are also practical).
The goal is to shop intentionally and with purpose.

Focus on quality over quantity; it's not about how much you have but what you do with what you have that matters.
Invest in timeless, durable pieces rather than fast-fashion trends.
Fashion is what you buy; style is what you do with it.
Your clothes speak before you do. So select clothing that reflects your unique and beautiful personality.
Some of you might want a different capsule wardrobe for each season. If you use this approach, pack away out-of-season clothes to keep your closet focused and manageable.

You also want to add one to three patterned items to make your wardrobe more interesting. They can be tops, skirts, bottoms, or dresses. It can even be accessories.
The above chart shows some of the most common patterns. Other popular patterns include polka dots, houndstooth, and stripes.
If you choose a floral top or pants, be sure the colors in the top, pants, or skirt coordinate with your accent color and/or your base colors.
Isabella's Color Capsule Wardrobe (Sample Wardrobe)
For educational purposes, I will demonstrate an ideal sample wardrobe using an autumn color palette. My three adjectives are elegant, polished, and modern-vintage.
You can create and use your own color palette; mine is only as a guide.
I also have a curvy rectangle body type. To learn more about body types and how to dress according to yours, please read my blog post: "How to Choose the Perfect Dress for Your Body Type."

Eleven Tips for an Ideal Capsule Wardrobe

Tip #1 - A Black Dress: A black dress is the most versatile dress you can own; it can be worn year-round and for any occasion.
It can take you from the boardroom, a funeral, and to an upscale restaurant - all in one day!
A sleeveless sheath dress with a modest neckline, preferably square, boat, or high, will look classy and offer the most versatility.
You can pair it with a blazer, shawl, bolero cardigan, or wear it solo, depending on the weather and event.
Keep it simple with elegant pearls, classic heels, and your favorite lipstick.
In addition to your "little black dress", aim to have two to three additional dresses (they don't all have to be black, but they should match your color palette or base neutrals) that can be rotated seasonally and worn on a variety of occasions.

Tip #2 - A Fitted Blazer: A fitted blazer adds structure to your outfit. It is elegant and classy, and will instantly slim any figure for a well-polished, modest look.
It can be mixed and matched with other basic items depending on the event. Wear it over your sheath dress from tip #1 for the perfect business attire: grab your coffee and work tote, and you are dressed for success!
Aim to have at least one fitted blazer in your capsule wardrobe, if not more.

Tip #3 - Five Skirts: Following the basic 5-5-5 rule, you want five skirts in your capsule wardrobe to mix and match with blouses, cardigans, blazers, and shirts.
Some common styles, such as the A-line midi, mermaid, and pencil skirts, will flatter most figures.
Just like your "little black dress," you also want a "little black skirt". (Or select one in another neutral color of your preference).
You can create countless outfit combinations with just one black skirt.

Tip #4 - Elegant Blouses & Casual Tops: A white blouse instantly adds a touch of elegance to any outfit and is a must-have staple in your capsule wardrobe.
When it is crisp and clean, a $15 shirt looks and feels luxurious. For a nice silhouette, select one that tapers in at the waist.
Wrapped blouses are very elegant and can be worn with jeans or a skirt. If the neckline is low, wear a camisole underneath to stay modest.
In addition to the white blouse, you also want to have a black one. Both are neutral base colors and can be worn with different jeans, skirts, and bottoms to create many effortless outfits.

Tip # 5 - Cardigans/Sweaters: Keep three to five cardigans (outerwear/layers) that fit your style and personality in your color-capsule wardrobe.
A button-down cardigan, as shown above, can be worn solo or with an elegant blouse. In contrast, a waterfall cardigan exudes a flowy, sophisticated elegance when worn with a stylish blouse.

Tip #6 - Tailored Trousers or Dress Slacks: Select five pairs of dress trousers.
The dress slacks should be in a neutral color to coordinate with your other wardrobe essentials (I recommend having at least one black pair and one white). Select styles that fit your personality!

Tip #7 - A Dress Coat: When the season permits, there is nothing more elegant than a beautiful dress coat. I love a princess cut.
Personally, I do not currently own a dress coat, because I wear a wrap cloak shawl that is easy to fold and pack into a suitcase. It also provides the same warmth as a coat, when worn with a sweater or cardigan underneath, without the bulk.
But when I did own a dress coat, I wore a princess cut.
In addition to a dress coat, you should have a raincoat or trench coat, as well as a winter coat. Again, these extra items are seasonal and do not necessarily fall under your capsule wardrobe.

Tip #8 - Summer Dresses & Two Bolero Sweaters: Aim to have at least 3 summer dresses in your wardrobe for nice occasions. In addition, keep at least two bolero or cropped sweaters for style & modesty in your capsule wardrobe. They are good to wear with summer dresses or to wear for a semi-formal event with your black sheath dress.

Tip #9 - Jeans: I currently have five pairs of everyday jeans in my capsule wardrobe: 1 white pair, 1 black pair, and 3 blue pairs, including 1 boot-cut style.
I personally love skinny jeans. They can be dressed up or down. You can wear them with heels, flats, sandals, and dress boots to create a variety of elegant & feminine outfits.
If you don't like skinny jeans, pick a style that better suits your personality.

Tip #10 - A Dress Suit: And last, but certainly not least, I think every woman should own at least one dress suit.
Now, keep in mind that you could make a dress suit from the black sheath dress and the fitted blazer, as I mentioned in tip #1; however, a separate dress suit adds more versatility, elegance, and style to your capsule wardrobe.
It also projects authority and confidence in professional settings, job interviews, and formal events.
Miscellaneous Items

Dress Gloves, Signature Scent & Lipstick: I believe an elegant woman should always have dress gloves in her purse. They help you look more modest and better put together for a clean, well-polished look.
In addition, find your signature scent. I once had a man follow my scent all the way to my workstation when I worked a 9-to-5 job. He said he loved my perfume and followed it to me! Just like your clothes, your signature scent should reflect your unique personality rather than be a fashion trend.
I suggest you visit a perfume counter at your local department store or beauty center to sample different fragrances. Try to match one with your body chemistry for the perfect scent.
And, of course, you need the perfect shade of red lipstick to finish off your signature look!
The right shade of lipstick brightens your complexion, balances facial features, and adds a polished "put-together look, even without other makeup.
Some women shy away from red lipstick, but there is a shade of lipstick for every skin tone. Use the YouTube video posted at the end of this blog post to find your perfect shade of red lipstick!

Elegant Lounge Wear & a House Dress: I want to look elegant and well put together at all times, even when at home.
Elegant loungewear is the perfect solution for achieving my goal. It allows me to run to the mailbox or open the door to accept a package without looking a mess.
Have at least one or two sets of comfortable, elegant loungewear while in the house. Some women prefer house dresses (I personally love 1950s house dresses and plan to buy at least 2 or 3 ).
These outfits are not for sleeping, but for style and comfort while working in the home and caring for your family.

Undergarments & Lingerie: I love feeling elegant and pretty, even if it's only for myself. Treating myself to nice undergarments is a small luxury that I enjoy. It boosts my self-esteem and helps me feel more confident in my day-to-day life.
I was also taught that a modest woman should always wear hosiery while wearing dresses. It smooths the skin on our legs, providing a polished, more tailored silhouette and professional look.
I am a huge fan of Vienne Milano's Made-in-Italy thigh highs. They are durable, comfortable, elegant, and glamorous. You can wear them with dress slacks, jeans, dresses, and on every occasion!

A Structured Handbag: A versatile, elegant handbag can go from work to dinner, and with many different outfits!
If you like leather, as I do, try to buy from a reputable dealer who uses leather from the by-products of food, or choose vegan (cruelty-free) leather.

Assortment of Shoes: You want an assortment of shoes in your capsule wardrobe: flats, heels, boots, and sandals.
For dress heels, keep a pair of classic black and a pair of nude to match all your other wardrobe pieces. (If you go over a little with the shoes, it's ok. We, ladies, have to accessorize!)

If you are a Christian woman, you should pray to God and consider wearing a Christian Veil. The Christian Veil of God's Holy Order is a part of my everyday wardrobe. I currently have 5 Christian Veils that I coordinate with my outfits (I plan to buy more in a variety of colors).
From ancient times, women of God have always worn head coverings to show they are completely devoted and submitted to God in Christ Jesus (1 Corinthians 11:1-16). Again, I ask that you pray to God about this subject, as it is a personal matter for each woman. If you would like to read my blog post on "Why Women of God in Christ Jesus Should Wear the Christian Veil of God's Holy Order", please click the following link.
A sustainable, practical, and functional capsule wardrobe doesn’t have to cost you a fortune. Knowing how to shop for the right pieces of garments and what to match together is the key. It's not about how much you have, but what you have that matters.
If you like high-quality items, as I do, watch and wait for the end-of-season sales from your favorite stores. I have bought dresses worth hundreds of dollars for a fraction of the cost. This goes for high-end shoes as well.
So, there you have it!
And remember, ladies, true elegance and beauty come from within.💋
