It's springtime! Spring is a time for renewal and a fresh start; a time to clear away Old Man Winter's dust! And, what better way to start the season than with a clean, fresh, and organized home?

Don't know where to start?

Well, I am going to help you!

Below are twelve helpful tips for spring cleaning your home:

  1. Create a Plan:  Avoid burnout and fatigue by breaking down your tasks room by room, setting aside specific days for deep cleaning.

  2. Declutter First:  Before you start cleaning, declutter by sorting your items into storage, donation, or trash bins to reduce stress and to make the process easier.

  3. Work Top-to-Bottom:  First, dust fan blades, light fixtures, and ceilings to avoid dust falling on already-cleaned areas. This also makes it easier to vacuum up dust later on in the process.

  4. Refresh Mattresses and Bedding:  To freshen your mattresses, sprinkle baking soda on them to remove moisture and stubborn odors.  Let the baking soda sit for about 30 minutes to an hour before vacuuming.  Wash all bedding and pillows.

  5. Deep-clean appliance coils and behind machines:  Clean behind the stove and refrigerator, then vacuum the refrigerator coils.  Clean the inside of the oven and the microwave.

  6. Clean Windows: Dust or wash blinds. Vacuum curtains and clean window tracks, which can accumulate dirt. Wash windows with a mixture of vinegar and water (50/50 mix), and clean window screens with soap and water.

  7. Wipe down walls and Baseboards: Use a duster or microfiber mop to clean dust from walls, and scrub scuffs from baseboards with soap and water.

  8. Replace filters and safety equipment: Change HVAC air filters, clean exhaust fans, and check the batteries in your smoke detectors.

  9. Clean pantry and refrigerator:  Remove old, moldy, and expired food from the pantry and refrigerator. Clean the inside of the fridge with soap and water, and clean the cupboards with Murphy Oil Soap or a mixture of vinegar and water. After cleaning, sort and organize your food storage.

  10. Sanitize electronics:  Wipe down electronics, such as remote controls, keyboards, and screens.  These things are often neglected and can harbor bacteria, viruses, and germs.

  11. Clean your cleaning tools:  Make sure your vacuum bag and filter are empty, and clean the mop heads to prevent spreading dirt and germs.

  12. Use the “20-10” Method:  To avoid fatigue and exhaustion, set a timer and clean for 20 minutes, then rest for 10 minutes. Repeat this in intervals.

Spring cleaning does not need to be difficult; in fact, it can be uplifting and fun! By using the twelve helpful tips in my post, you can have your home bright, fresh, and clean in no time!
